Fendor’s SlimLine secondary glazing system provides fire protection to the externally glazed façade of the new office block, No 1 London Wall. The SlimLine system allowed the size of the modules on the external façade of the building to be maintained along with the narrow sightlines as specified by the architects, Foster & Partners.

SlimLine insulated glazing system with side-hung opening panels providing 30-minutes fire integrity were used for this project. The system offers specifiers a wide range of profiles and sizes for fixed glazing with a snap-on bead. The system can be used externally and internally, thermally or non-thermally broken. The profiles can also provide fire integrity and insulation.

Fendor's solution-led glazing designs provide architects, designers and surveyors with technical support from the initial design stages of projects through to an on-site installation service. Fendor handles design, fabrication and installation of its products to ensure consistent product quality and installation to high standards. Installer David Brunskill Windows has switched to using Heat Shield doors panels from leading home improvement stockists GAP. The Keighley-based company started installing Heat Shield doors in October after experiencing problems with traditional woodgrain finish doors.

Managing Director David Brunksill comments: “The standard woodgrain finish doors we fitted suffered from warping and cracking. The doors bowed in the frame too affected performance and their appearance. We’re happy to go back and replace the doors but this costs valuable time and we know some customers will complain to friends and family rather than calling us.”

Heat Shield is a specially formulated woodgrain foil designed to combat warping, cracking and bubbling. Twelve times thicker than traditional woodgrain foils, it absorbs less heat so it doesn’t expand and contract in temperature fluctuations and it’s scratch resistant.

David adds: “We want to supply woodgrain finish doors which last. Heat Shield looks good and stays looking good for longer.”

Vision 3000 Window System from Glas Facades.JPG

The requirement for window systems that meet the latest Building Regulations, in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency, has never been greater.

The recent launch of the Vision 3000 range of high performance composite windows by Glas Facades draws on the latest technological advances in energy saving performance as well as ensuring the timber used is from sustainable sources.

The system, which originates from Switzerland, comprises timber-cored components that are faced with a maintenance free external cladding of aluminium. Vision 3000 offers the advantages of both materials combined into a single, technically advanced and aesthetically desirable window system. It can be double or triple glazed and is available in Finished Pine, Natural Pine, Canadian Pine and European Oak versions.

There are two types available.  The Vision 3000 UK version has a full face aluminium external section cladding that is ideal for new and existing traditional flush structural openings.   The Vision 3000 EU version has part aluminium and part insulation facing and is suitable for new and existing European style internal rebate check reveals. The EU version provides an impressive, minimal sightline to heads and jambs of only 17mm.

The choice of quality timber products offers complete flexibility when it comes to internal design and the ability to match other internal building products, states Glas Facades. The timber used is Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) certified. PEFC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, promoting sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. In addition to that, up to 70% of the aluminium used in the window system has been recycled.

With its inherent strength available from the precision engineered sections and timber types used, it is possible to have opening windows on a scale not generally available in the UK window market, e.g. a single pane side hung open in casement measuring as much as 1,700mm wide x 2,000mm high with no increase in sightlines, nor special considerations necessary. The only real requirement is to ensure a careful assessment of site handling procedures.

Vision 3000 has had all performance criteria tested to an exacting standard to conform to both UK and European markets. With the gathering momentum for window energy rated (WER) windows, the system can be used to achieve British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ ratings, depending on the type of IGU specified. ‘A’ rated Vision 3000 windows would be suitable components in carbon neutral, zero carbon, or PassivHaus projects. (PassivHaus is a mainland European Standard for energy efficient building.) Glas Facades is a London based company formed by experienced specialist window suppliers.

Commitment to excellent product quality and customer service has secured a major new contract for Phoenix Door Panels with the UK’s fastest growing home emergency services provider, Homeserve plc. The Cambridgeshire-based composite door and PVC-U panel supplier is now servicing a long-term supply agreement with the blue-chip national home emergency and domestic repair supplier to the insurance industry.

This involves supplying door panels to 33 Homeserve branches throughout the UK, including Northern Ireland and Scotland. The deal was signed after Phoenix passed an initial trial with 100% success rate to demonstrate their credentials by supplying bespoke PVC-U door panels within three days to branches throughout the country.

Haydon Statham, National Sales Manager at Phoenix Door Panels says their proven ability to deliver on service was key to clinching this important contract. “Given that we already had the operations and infrastructure in place, we were able to supply Homeserve with exactly what they need, and crucially, to their strict timescales. Investment in a fourth vacuum-former and a second CNC router has further increased our production efficiency, enabling us to not only meet, but exceed all our customers’ requirements.

“We’re delighted to be working with such a prestigious client and look forward to a long and successful business relationship with Homeserve.”

While the success of the current Arsenal squad is founded on talented young players, those responsible for regenerating the Premiership football club’s former ground are concentrating on restoring the splendour of the past. It is a task that Steel Window Service & Supplies is not only well equipped for, but proud to be involved with.

The steel window specialist has been selected by Sir Robert McAlpine as a package contractor/supply chain partner for the work on the East Stand of what is to be known as Highbury Square, a high quality residential development. The company is tasked with repairing and re-glazing close to 200 original frames, as well as with undertaking the fabrication of another 120 new windows, in an authentic style.

For this ‘replica refurbishment’ element of its contract, Steel Window Service & Supplies is to employ W20 system sections to match the old Universal Suite, enabling the fenestration pattern, of mainly ‘marginal pane’ pivoting lights, to be enhanced with modern draught-stripping, 16 mm double glazing and a factory applied polyester powder paint finish in ‘Gunners Red’. Crucially, more thermally efficient, 14 mm double glazed units will also be introduced into the original frames after they have been removed to the company’s north London workshop for cleaning, repair and corrosion protection. The replacement glazing will be accompanied by the provision of new glazing bars and matching ironmongery.

The engineer at Sir Robert McAlpine responsible for Steel Window Service & Supplies’ element of the contract, Stephen Chan, comments: “Back in 2006 we contacted the company regarding the feasibility of refurbishing the windows in the listed façade. In the first instance they presented us with the report and then responded with a quotation for carrying out the necessary work. We were confident enough to give the go-ahead and the contract is now getting under way.”

The repair work has been made more complicated by the structural requirement to utilise an elaborate façade retention system, featuring scaffold sections inserted through window openings.

31831c - Save costs with Duralite spacer system.JPG

Warm edge technology is sometimes seen as a relatively costly way to add value to IGUs. Not any more now that Tremco illbruck has revealed that by using its Duralite IG spacer system manufacturers’ production costs can actually be reduced. Stockholding is lower thanks to the fact that Duralite is a single component system and waste is completely eliminated since manufacturers only use what they need.

Duralite also reduces the amount of machinery space required, since it is only a three step process compared to up to nine stages of production for many other IG sealant systems. Labour costs per unit are dramatically reduced to only 5% with Duralite compared with a typical 10% for multi-component spacer bar systems (subject to IG manufacturing system).

”This is value adding technology,” said Glen Horrocks of Tremco illbruck. “Compared with IG manufacturing operations using typical metal spacer systems, Duralite can help boost margins and increase profits.”

Duralite also adds further value since it offers higher performance in terms of thermal efficiency than other systems. This level of performance comes from the patented Duralite design which features composite laminating technology without the use of metal Duralite is an all-in-one spacer system designed for high volume production of IG units in a process where units are sealed using heat and compression.  Designed as a single seal system, Duralite can also be used with a secondary sealant to create a dual seal unit.
