The Corporate 2000 range of steel windows
from Essex-based Crittall Windows has undergone - and passed -
Hurricane Testing in the United States - an important export
market for the company, which is one of the world’s
biggest producers of steel windows. The test, which cost over
$100,000, focused on the company's high performance Corporate
2000 range.
The rigorous testing took place at the
Facility of Architectural Testing in York, Pennsylvania. Three
units from each window type were tested: fixed lights; side
hung open out and projected top hung open out; and folding out
door. Each window which was double-glazed had to withstand a
large missile impact consistent with flying debris found in
hurricane storm conditions.
The missile is represented as a 100mm x
50mm x 3780mm long timber weighing 4.2kg. This is fired from a
cannon at a distance of 5.2 metres at a velocity of 15m/sec.
The windows and doors were then exposed to
air pressure cycling of 4500 cycles in both a positive and
negative pressure at a maximum design pressure of plus/ minus
2873pa. This corresponds to missile level D and wind Zone 3
within the USA.
This is a significant achievement for
Crittall Windows,” comments John Pyatt, managing director
of Crittall, “and will greatly assist in our development
of the North American market where the demand for hurricane
testing is on the increase, particularly on the Eastern
Seaboard.”
The $100,000-plus investment was essential
to prove our Corporate 2000 range is resilient and incredibly
strong under the most rigorous testing, and we are delighted
that steel windows have yet another advantage over comparable
fenestration materials.”

New World has launched Isolate, a 30-minute
fire-rated composite doorset for use in multi-resident housing
with Secure by Design certification. With a Kerto core
encased in 2mm GRP skins, similar to Apeer and Monno, it has
the same distinctive grain definition and moulding. Set
in a hardwood frame, Isolate’s 44mm thick door slab
incorporates a single glazed cassette with fire resistant clear
glass. There are four solid and four glazed door styles
available in white, blue, red and green.
Designed specifically for local authorities
multi-resident housing or sheltered accommodation, where
elderly or vulnerable people live independently, New
World’s Isolate fire door will help to provide an
enhanced protective environment. With a 10%
moisture content, Isolate’s 39.5mm core is a strong
laminate, Kerto. Carrying a PEFC [environmental
sustainability] endorsement, it has a slow burn rate and
ideal for New World’s Isolate where the aim was to
produce a robust, fire resistant door slab.
As 50 per cent of heat is transmitted
through glass by radiation, smoke, gases and flames are also
kept at bay by the 7.2mm Pyroglass cassette. Together
with the intumescent seal, these are secured in place with hard
wood beading.
Fire doorsets are subject to severe tests
and the whole doorset must pass, including the door slab, frame
and hardware. Isolate has a 70mm mahogany hardwood frame
(tested to BS EN 942) to ensure that the integrity of the
structure remains intact for the minimum 30 minutes and beyond.
As well as Isolate’s fully-tested closers fitted as
standard, New World has used a Millenco Mantis brass or
stainless steel locking system, including a 20mm brass
faceplate, three hooks, two deadbolts and three flush-fit flag
hinges.

Global composite doors are available for
delivery in just three days from Synseal. New for 2008, the
white frame and door slab colours match perfectly. And
it’s the only GRP door on the market to match perfectly.
The new stock will be phased in over the next few weeks.
A key selling point for installers of
Synseal conservatories is the colour-matched roof and windows.
So when we designed the Global composite door, we wanted the
frame and door to match too. After all you wouldn’t get
out different colour pots of paint to paint the frame and door.
You want them to match perfectly, and that’s why
the Global GRP door is perfectly colour-matched to the Global
PVC outerframe.
During December we’ve built up stocks
to provide this industry leading service. The substantial
stocks mean Synseal can promise three day delivery on many of
the 16 billion door combinations.
“Demand for the new Global composite
doors has been great,” says Nick Dutton, Sales and
Marketing Director. “And we expect that to increase in
2008. The three day service has made a massive difference to
installers. Now they can have a composite door quicker than a
PVC panel door!”
Like all global products, the new range of
doors is ready-to-install and is available in just three days.
