Solidor
Solidor is arguably the UK’s fastest growing manufacturer of composite doors, offering an unrivalled number of internal and external colours on a unique solid timber based core.
About the company
The composite door market is one of the most buoyant parts of the glazing industry as homeowners seek to add a high performance timber effect front door to their properties, which also carries enhanced levels of security. There are a large number of first generation ‘me-too’ GRP doors on the market, but second generation products are now coming to fruition. Solidor is leading the way with this regard, claiming a number of industry ‘firsts’.
The company has a long established base in the door market through sister company, Nice Door Panels and was set up as a separate company in 2005 as demand started to increase significantly. Since then, the company has continued to develop the product further to incorporate new designs, Werbar reinforcement and have implemented their own ‘Green Promise.’
Product ranges
There are two distinct product ranges from Solidor: their traditional range and a luxurious and contemporary Italia collection. Each product range is available in 13 internal and external colours so there’s a huge choice for the consumer or social housing specifier. These colours include white, red, black, blue, green, foiled white, rosewood, golden oak, Irish oak, cream, grey, schwarzbraun, and now chartwell green.
The traditional range extends to 8 designs, including the Flint Cottage door option, each available with a matching half or full height side panel. The Italia Collection boasts an impressive 17 contemporary options, each influenced by Italian and continental styling and are again available with a matching half or full height side panel.
Both the traditional designs and the Italia Collection are available in the 13 finishes which include woodgrains, coloured grains and smooth effect finishes. Each of these coloured finishes is designed to perfectly match PVC-U outer frames and Solidor has chosen to offer the Kömmerling 5 chambered outer frame. This is extruded from Greenline, their exclusive lead-free compound and also supports the company’s own Green Promise.
In addition to these design options, the company also offers a full range of stable doors in all 13 finishes with new high security hardware as standard. One of the more recent developments has been the French door option which can be either a 50:50 or 70:30 split and is available with matching side panels, along with a number of glazing options from the standard range of doors.
These new French doors benefit from Solidor’s proven solid timber core, twin double door seal and a dedicated Secured by Design composite door locking system from Winkhaus. Standard hardware options for the main traditional and Italia Collection include the Millenco Magnum cylinder. This is highly resistant to physical attack and incorporates a 12 telescopic pin tumbler system, with 4 anti-pick pins per side and patented anti-snap and anti-bump features.
Solidor also offer Mila’s ProStyle range of matching handles and letterboxes, which are available in a choice of white, polished gold pvd, chrome, smokey chrome and the industry’s first true brushed satin chrome finish. The company was particularly pleased to be the first composite door company to use the range last year.
Glass options are not limited by door design either and Solidor can offer a wide range of glass options for all door styles. These glass options are secured by ABS glazing cassettes, which have been proven to provide a better colour match and longer term colour retention.
Solidor was also proud to be the first composite door company in the UK to offer the Werbar reinforcement. It’s made from recycled PVC-U, has excellent screw retention properties and enhances the energy efficiency of the door frame. It’s also better for the environment, along with their fully recyclable door slabs and lead-free door skins, edgebanding and Kömmerling door frames.
Services and support
Not only has considerable investments been made in the infrastructure of the company, but also in their marketing support. There’s a new website, new 36 page brochure which incorporates the entire range and a number of wall charts and posters.
The company also carries ISO 9001:2000 and the product carries Secured by Design and the latest PAS23/24 standards. Given the credentials of the product, it also comes with a comprehensive 10 year warranty for all options.
Many companies have leapt on the green issue but Solidor offer a lead-free door frame, recycled reinforcement, shared transport policy, recycling programme and a fully recyclable door slab where all timbers used are sustainable, within their ‘Green Promise.’ It’s a big message to the consumer and social housing specifier.
